Ranking 4 Vegan & Cruelty Free Mascaras from Sephora

August 3, 2020 By Penny

Four travel size mascara tubes: Hourglass Caution, Milk Kush & Kush Waterproof, & Too Faced Better Than Sex

Sephora has quite a few vegan and cruelty free mascara options, which is awesome! I compared four popular vegan and cruelty free mascara options from Sephora for a couple of months and have thoughts to share with y’all.

Here are the vegan and cruelty free mascaras I tried from Sephora, ranked from worst to best (from my experience/preferences):

#4. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

(Sephora Rating: 3.7/5 Stars, $25 or $13 for the travel size)

It was a surprising to me that the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara was my least favorite of the four I compared because it was my favorite mascara for years. It is a beautiful mascara that adds volume and drama to the lashes, but I realized while paying attention to how it wore that this mascara flakes on me a lot. Every time I wear it, I end up with big mascara flakes under my eyes at the end of the day, which is a no no for me.

#3. Milk Makeup Kush High Volume Mascara

(Sephora Rating: 3.9/5 Stars, $24 or $12 for the travel size)

The Milk Makeup Kush High Volume Mascara is hyped up by a lot of people, and I can understand why–it gives lashes a lovely fluttery look with length and volume, while still maintaining separation and looking fairly natural. My problem with the Kush Mascara is the same as the Better Than Sex though–it also flakes on me a lot (not quite as much as BTS.) It’s also messy to apply–the big wand often smudges onto my eyelid and/or under my eye as I’m applying it, and I don’t like that extra step of having to touch it up after application.

#2. Milk Makeup Kush High Volume Waterproof Mascara

(Sephora Rating: 3/5 Stars, $24 or $12 for the travel size)

The Milk Makeup Kush Waterproof Mascara is very similar to the original Kush High Volume Mascara (I compared the two in a post recently–check it out). It gives a similar look to the classic Kush, but I prefer it slightly because it flakes less than the original. Also, when it does flake, the flakes are smaller and less noticeable. It isn’t waterproof and smudge-proof as claimed though, which is disappointing and probably why it’s rated so low on Sephora. Like the classic Kush, it also often smudges for me upon application, and it also smears/runs if my eyes water during the day.

#1. Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara

(Sephora Rating: 4.1/5 Stars, $29 or $14 for the travel size)

This is the best vegan and cruelty free mascara I’ve tried. It gives lashes length and volume for dramatic lashes with just one layer. It’s also easy to apply since it has a skinny wand, so I usually don’t smear it upon application. Lastly, this mascara doesn’t budge! It doesn’t flake or smudge throughout the day, which is amazing. The only con is the price, but I usually buy the travel size since I don’t go through a whole tube within six months (you’re only supposed to keep mascaras for six months once they’re open). Even though it’s expensive, it’s still worth it in my opinion.

Have you tried any of these vegan mascaras from Sephora or other vegan and cruelty free mascaras? Any favorites? I’d also love to find some great affordable/drugstore vegan and cruelty free mascara options, so if you know of any good ones, please let me know in the comments! I already have my eye on a few to try soon when I finish up these.
