Over the holidays I went to San Antonio twice to visit family (I already wrote about the first trip here if you want to check it out.) Since I was with non-vegan family (who aren’t all open to all vegan/vegetarian places), I ate at omnivore restaurants that have vegan options.

The first place we went to was Mellow Mushroom. I used to love Mellow Mushroom when I was in college at UT–my friends and I would walk to the one on the drag, and I loved their crust and the fun atmosphere. I hadn’t been in years (not since going vegan), but I heard they have vegan cheese/options. I was thrilled when I got to there and realized they not only have vegan cheese, they have a whole separate vegan menu with five vegan specialty pizzas (the host offered it to us, I didn’t even have to ask for it)! I think that may be unique to the San Antonio location though because I didn’t see the specialty pizzas when I checked online ahead of time.
I got The Refresher and added tempeh because I was in the mood for something with red sauce, but I’m excited to go back and try the other options as well. Their pizza is tasty, just as I remember it!

Another place we tried was Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant, which was suggested by family there (I do have one cousin that’s vegan, woo!) since they have vegan options labeled on the menu. I got the Flautas de Camote, which are stuffed with sweet potatoes and come with special vegan rice and beans (the standard ones aren’t vegan). Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, so I’ll probably end up going back when I’m in town with non-vegan family again.

The last place we went was Chuy’s–I’ve been eating at Chuy’s for years, long before I was vegan. I used to love going to the original Austin one in college, and there’s one in The Woodlands that I go to often with family as well. I got the nachos without cheese and added guacamole and pico, and it was satisfying as usual, though I do hope they add vegan cheese/meat as an option at some point.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that I was able to eat at the free breakfast the hotel we stayed at offered–they had plain oatmeal and fruit (as most hotels I’ve been to do.) I also brought some Silk singles for my coffee, which I found at a random Walmart while traveling. I’m not sure if all Walmarts carry them, so I’m going to keep my eye out.
Have you tried any vegan options in San Antonio? Any places I should try? Which pizza should I try next at Mellow Mushroom? Let me know in the comments!
